BPH Q & A

What are the symptoms of BPH?

Benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH symptoms include:

  • Frequent urination
  • Weak stream of urine
  • Dribbling or leakage after urinating
  • Difficulty emptying the bladder
  • Frequent nighttime urination

The symptoms of BPH often worsen over time. In some cases, BPH can cause blood in your urine or increase your risk of developing a urinary tract infection (UTI). Symptoms aren’t always related to the size of your prostate, so even minor enlargement can result in severe symptoms.

For some men, BPH stabilizes on its own and can improve over time. The symptoms of BPH are often similar to other conditions like infections, kidney stones, or prostate cancer, so if you experience symptoms, it’s important to get an accurate diagnosis.

What causes BPH?

Your prostate continues to grow throughout your life. For some men, this natural enlargement can interfere with their urinary health, resulting in BPH.

Although prostate enlargement is a natural part of aging, there are a number of factors that can increase your risk of developing BPH like genetics, diabetes, heart disease, obesity, and limited physical activity.

If your symptoms are interfering with your urinary health or daily life, Urological Associates can help you find the right treatment.

What treatments are available for BPH?

Urological Associates offers safe, advanced treatments for BPH. These include:

Rezum

Rezum is an innovative in-office treatment that allows your doctor to reduce the prostate tissue responsible for your BPH symptoms. Rezum is a minimally invasive procedure that uses water vapor energy to eliminate obstructions of your urinary tract. This safe and effective procedure restores your urinary health without the need for medications or surgery.

UroLift

UroLift is another innovative in-office procedure that allows your doctor to address the excess prostate tissue that’s blocking your urinary tract. During the procedure, your urologist places a series of tiny implants that lift and hold your excess prostate tissue. This minimally invasive treatment provides you with rapid relief and requires very little recovery time.

Button electrode vaporization

Button electrode vaporization is an advanced, minimally invasive alternative to traditional methods of vaporization. During the procedure, your urologist uses a small electrode with a button-shaped tip to remove excess prostate tissue. Button electrode vaporization is a low-risk procedure that results in less damage to the tissues surrounding your prostate.

TURP

Transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) is a procedure to address mild to moderate BPH. Your urologist inserts a small instrument called a resectoscope through your urethra. They use the resectoscope to trim excess prostate tissue and remove the blockage from your urinary tract.

Urological Associates also offers laser vaporization for BPH.
